Scotland Campervan Hire – Caithness and Sutherland

11th July 2015

It’s time to set out from Inverness on the A9 and head toward Gill’s Bay, Scotland, where we will catch the ferry to Orkney in our Scotland campervan hire. This leg of the journey takes us into Caithness and Sutherland, which has some of the wildest landscapes in Scotland and a rich cultural history to explore. Here, at the edge of Scotland, the sunrises and sunsets are magical. The scenery is breathtaking- remote cliffs, long sandy beaches, panoramic mountain vistas, rivers teeming with trout- it truly feels like the edge of the world in a campervan hire. But not too far out for brilliant golfing.

As we head north in your Scotland campervan hire, we come to the old country town of Dornoch, Scotland. Stop here to tour the cathedral or play a round at one of the northern most first-class golf courses in the world. Up the road, visit Dunrobin Castle, a spectacular French inspired estate and gardens- 189 rooms of fabulous collections to discover, so set aside part of the day. Be on the lookout as you explore the countryside in your Scotland campervan hire, as there are hundreds of ancient brochs and other archaeological sites, many near the main roads. One of our top picks is the mysterious Hill O’ Many Stanes, right off the A99 near Lybster- you’ve never seen anything like it!

Castle Mey with Scotland Campervan hire

Spend a half day at Castle Mey, just a few miles from the ferry terminal at Gill’s Bay. Built in the 16th century, the Queen Mother acquired it in the 1950’s, then set about renovating this magnificent 2,000 acre estate. It was one of her favourite places, especially the marvellous gardens, and we quite agree-it’s rose heaven.

There are a number of great touring parks and campsites in the area, especially near Thurso, Wick and John O’ Groats, but this far north, free wild camping is definitely an option when you choose Scotland campervan hire. Overnight parking is allowed in most places so we have never been stuck for a place to sleep for the night. Take a few days before you board the ferry to Orkney to drink in the tranquility and beauty of Caithness and Sutherland- it will capture your soul.
