Chasing the ghost of Rob Roy across Perthshire in a campervan rentalPosted on: February 27, 2018
Robert MacGregor, aka Rob Roy may be the hero of Sir Walter Scott’s and Daniel Defoe’s novels, but he was also a real life figure, whose story of outlaw romance can be traced through one of the most beautiful parts of Scotland when you choose to holiday in a motorhome from Roseisle.
Known as the “Robin Hood of Scotland”, Rob Roy (in Gaelic, Raibert Rubah, or “red headed Robert”) was in truth, an infamous 17th-18th century businessman turned cattle rustler and brigand, who achieved folk hero status as a supporter of the Jacobite cause. According to legend (and a film starring Ralph Fiennes as the dashing Rob) he was forced to turn outlaw when he was robbed and couldn’t afford to pay his debts.
